Kathe Umlauf has been sculpting animals her entire life. She has studied art extensively and works in clay primarily. She works from life, observing the natural beauty and grace of living creatures. She travels to zoos, farms, and stables to find the animals that inspire her, and in those places, she works directly in clay to capture a true likeness. Her clay works are often fired, and some are offered as editions in bronze. She enjoys animals as subject matter because she can combine the formal aspects of design with the specific details of animals to create a work of art that expresses emotion and intelligence. She lives in rural Northwest Pennsylvania with her husband and many pets. Her works can be found locally as well as in regional galleries and has won many awards for her work.
