Founded in 1974, Glass Growers Gallery is celebrating 50 years in business. For the occasion, we've brought in many kaleidoscopes and terrariums as significant parts of our history.

Kaleidoscopes:

From the mid-80's to the mid-90's at 701 Holland Street, Glass Growers Gallery hosted annual kaleidoscope shows featuring a wide number and range of kaleidoscope makers from across the country. As explained in the 5th annual brochure:

"Relax... Viewing kaleidoscopes has proven to induce a relaxed state and inspire creative thinking. So, Glass Growers Gallery invites you to RELAX, breathe deeply and join us for a fun-filled array of kaleidoscopes. For collectors and enthusiasts, this show will delight everyone. We have the finest in technically-interesting and aesthetically-pleasing kaleidoscopes. They are available in a wide variety of prices from $6 to $1,400. We are certain one will fit in the hand and home of someone you know and want to please."

Terrariums:

In 1974, John and Deborah Vahanian founded Glass Growers Gallery as a studio and exhibit space where they showcased their terrariums and other glass art. In their creation process, referred to as “growing glass”, they combined flat sheets of glass to make 3D objects including geodesic domes and quartz crystal shapes that later became part of kinetic sculpture (flying machines), light fixtures, and windows. The original storefront at 2nd & Plum was filled with beautiful plants and terrariums and had walls made of reclaimed barn wood, creating a bright, welcoming, and lush natural space.
